A starter list
Almost everyone
- 1/4" and 3/8" drive socket sets, standard and deep (SAE first; some metric)
- Combination wrenches in the common SAE sizes
- Screwdrivers, including Phillips and Reed & Prince tips
- Safety-wire pliers and diagonal cutters
- Adjustable wrench, needle-nose and slip-joint pliers
- Flashlight or headlamp, inspection mirror, and a pick set
- A lockable box you can inventory at a glance
Structures / sheet metal
- Rivet gun and a small set of bucking bars
- Drill motor and cleco pliers with clecos
- Deburring tool and hole-finder (as the shop allows)
Avionics / electrical
- Multimeter
- Wire strippers and the crimpers your employer specifies
- Pin insertion/extraction tools for common connectors (often company-supplied)
Buy quality in what you’ll use every shift, and mark every tool as yours. Specialty tools can wait until you know what your station works on.
